About Us

Our Mission

The Alabama Afterschool Community Network (ALACN) is located at the Truman Pierce Institute of the College of Education of Auburn University. ALACN works in collaboration with the Alabama State Department of Education, the Alabama Department of Human Resources, the Alabama 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA) to ensure Alabama youth, families, and communities have access to high quality programming during Out-of-School time that promotes positive development and life-long learning. Our goal as a Network is to support and strengthen Out-of-School time programs that engage youth, families, communities, and policy makers as champions for sustainable, high-quality opportunities to ensure a lifetime of learning.

The objectives affiliated with each of the above goals are ongoing and will continue to expand as the Network’s efforts increase.

 Objectives of Goal  1

  • Work to connect local and statewide agencies, community-based organizations (CBO’s), faith-based organizations (FBO’s), and Local Education Agency (LEA’s) to establish a sharing of knowledge, resources, and efforts
  • Conduct regional forums and workshops to bring area programs (LEA’s, CBO’s, FBO’s) together for the sharing of information and resources, the determining of shared needs, and the creation of lasting partnerships
  • Disseminate information to programs on potential grant opportunities, professional development happenings, available state agency initiatives, and community-based and faith-based organization resources
  • Maintain an informational and interactive website that will include data pertinent to Alabama out-of-school programs and their impact on our state’s schools, parents and families, and surrounding communities.  The website is also designed to provide resources and serve as a catalyst for programs to share information with one another, and key stakeholders and policy makers throughout the state

Objectives of Goal  2

  • Work to establish a rapport and ongoing professional relationship with the ALSDE, Superintendents,  Principals, School Boards, and Day School educators throughout the state
  • Build bridges, establish alliances, and give voice to community and faith based organizations, as we help entire communities recognize the need to pool resources to guarantee educational success
  • Generate statewide community awareness regarding the necessity of needed funding to support out-of-school programming which supplements educational learning objectives
  • Obtain and build additional support and revenue by engaging key stakeholders at the national, state and local community levels
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive statewide standard of excellence for Before / After / Summer programs
  • Establish systems of accountability that encompasses both ongoing self and external evaluation and assessment
  • Assist with action plans in response to assessment results to ensure programmatic improvement
  • Provide programmatic Technical Assistance through on-site efforts and by connecting resources to provide such services
  • Via the ALACN website, keep programs abreast of information regarding out-of-school programming issues both locally and nationwide
