ACEA Out-of-School Service Scholarship
2017 Scholarship Information
An Out-of-School program is an extension of the regular school day designed to offer enrichment programs for students and to meet the Afterschool needs of working parents. Major benefits of an Afterschool Program are a positive, supportive environment for Afterschool enrichment activities that support and enhance a student’s learning.
Ten scholarships will be awarded for FY 2017-18. Nine $1,000 scholarships and one Sallie Chastain Scholarship award winner for $2,000. Equity amongst the three regions will be sought. However, excellence of applicants will take priority over regional location.
The award(s) will be given based on availability of funds. Funds will be dispersed through checks written to the individual(s) receiving the scholarship. Dispensation of the allocation is not predetermined. However, the scholarship committee recommends the scholarship be used for tuition, books, room and board, etc.
Applicants must be a graduating senior in high school or a college aged student who will be preparing for a career in education at an academic institution of higher learning in the state of Alabama.
The scholarship will be awarded to one or more individuals who have volunteered or been employed through the Afterschool/Summer school Program in the state of Alabama and plan to make a difference in the future of Alabama education.
Scholarship recipients will be selected by a committee appointed by the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA, Inc.). The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of need, academic achievement, aptitude, contribution and service to an Afterschool/Summer school Program, and the student’s personal and professional goals.

A Completed Application Form (See below.)
Three Letters of Recommendation:
One letter from a teacher or administrator at the applicant’s High School – or – College Professor, if the Applicant is already attending a college or university
One letter from a supervisor of the Out-of-School program related to the student’s work or volunteer experience in the program
One letter from a personal acquaintance
HELPFUL HINTS FOR APPLICANTS
Submit your application packet early to allow Alabama Community Education Directors time to notify you of any missing items. This will give you an opportunity to correct omissions prior to the announced deadline.
Letters of recommendation are often late. To avoid this, make your request as soon as possible. At this time of year teachers are busy.
Only the requested information will be considered. Additional letters or resumes will not be sent to the selection committee.
