Two Tremendous Opportunities

Two Tremendous Opportunities!

National Geographic and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation have partnered to design a new Educator certification program  for both Afterschool and In-school Educators. By participating in this FREE online professional development, you will have the opportunity to help cultivate an “explorer mindset” in youth, as they tackle the real-world challenges of today and tomorrow.

National Geographic Educator Certification for Afterschool  is a free professional development program that recognizes pre-K through 12 formal and informal educators committed to inspiring the next generation of explorers, conservationists, and change-makers. These educators are part of a powerful movement to make the world a better place by empowering students to be informed decision-makers equipped to solve meaningful challenges in their communities and beyond.  Videos here (overview) and here (more on the benefits of participating).

Every day in Afterschool programs – in formal and informal ways – we know that adults are helping youth with skills like observation, communications, collaboration and problem solving.  Now we can offer a framework from National Geographic that puts those skills together with key attitudes that encompass the mindset of an explorer. We all want our young people will be:

  • Curious and adventurous—curious about how the world works, seeking out new and challenging experiences throughout their lives.
  • Responsible—with concern for the welfare of other people, cultural resources, and the natural world. They are respectful, considering multiple perspectives, and honoring others regardless of differences.
  • Empowered to make a difference. They act on curiosity, respect, responsibility, and adventurousness, and they persist in the face of challenges.

  • Free – participants receive world-class professional development from National Geographic.
  • 15-20 hours between May 20 – August 30; mostly online with hands-on activities with young people or staff.
  • Certified educators receive a certificate, digital badge, congratulatory items, and a letter validating the number of professional development hours.
  • Join an exclusive community of educators committed to supporting each other’s continuous growth.
  • Certified educators can  volunteer and engage in paid professional opportunities to advise on content and programming, lead National Geographic trainings, and serve as mentors to other educators. They receive early access to new National Geographic programs—including program connections with National Geographic Explorers—and they are eligible to apply for the annual Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship.

Host your own Global Rocket Launch event
and make history with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969, and we are celebrating in a big way! Although Dr. Wernher von Braun and his rocket team engineered and built the mighty Saturn V moon rocket in Huntsville, Alabama, the unprecedented mission to the moon was one of the greatest technological advancements for all of mankind.

The world held its collective breath fifty years ago when the magnificent Saturn V rocket launched from Earth on the greatest expedition anyone could imagine. To celebrate this spirit of global unity in space exploration, we invite you to participate with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s Global Rocket Launch event on July 16th.
